Afeka, Neot Afeka and Afeka College: one name, three places

In North Tel Aviv, "Afeka" can mean several different places. Where you're coming from shapes the easiest way to learn – at our school or at home.

Old Afeka: villas, gardens and a music school next door

Afeka was built in 1954–1955 by a housing cooperative of Haganah commanders, and most of the street names given to it back then refer to the organisation's operations. Today it's a neighbourhood of private houses and gardens, with Carter Garden on Komemiyut Street and the large Drazner Grove on its northern edge. Tel Baruch lies to the east, Tel Aviv University to the south, Neve Avivim to the west – and Ramat Aviv Gimel, where our school is, to the north-west. Whether you call your corner North Afeka or South Afeka, your lesson is waiting in the next neighbourhood over, a short ride away.

Afeka has kindergartens, but its children go to school in the surrounding neighbourhoods – so the family week already crosses into the neighbours' streets, and a lesson at our Ramat Aviv Gimel music school fits right in.

Neot Afeka A and B: residential streets in the north-east

Neot Afeka is really two neighbourhoods, both built in the 1960s and mostly made up of apartment buildings, with Avraham Shlonsky Street dividing Neot Afeka A to the north from Neot Afeka B to the south. They sit in the city's north-east, next to Revivim, Hadar Yosef, Maoz Aviv and Tel Baruch. From Neot Afeka the school is a short drive, and if you'd rather learn at home you can ask about Rockstar Home – lessons at the student's home, subject to teacher availability.

Afeka College: engineers who play

And the most common mix-up of all: Afeka College – the Afeka Tel Aviv Academic College of Engineering – isn't in the Afeka neighbourhood at all, but in Neot Afeka A. There's something natural about the link between engineering and music. Music is a system with beautiful rules: intervals, scales, frequency ratios and patterns that repeat.

What to learn in Afeka: students, teens and families

Long-established families, teenagers, and thousands of students at nearby Tel Aviv University and Afeka College – each starts from a different place and needs a different plan.

Students and young engineers

Your side project could be a song. Piano lessons in Afeka are a brilliant way into harmony, because every interval is laid out in front of you on the keys – and when you're ready to write, start with writing your first song, step by step.

Teens from Afeka and Neot Afeka

Teenagers who want a band quickly find out that the bass player is the one everyone's looking for. Bass lessons for Afeka teens build groove, listening and the ability to lock in with a drummer, and from there it's a short step to teen bands for players from Afeka.

Families: parents and kids

Your child's intro lesson is also a good chance to try a lesson of your own. We teach everyone from age 6 to 90, and we can try to schedule family members on the same day, subject to teacher availability.

For systems thinkers, here's what sits behind each instrument – and why it tends to appeal to people with a technical background:

InstrumentThe system behind itWhat you'll learn to do
Piano12 semitones to the octave, and every octave doubles the frequencyBuild chords from intervals, play progressions and understand why they work
GuitarEach fret is one semitone, and the same finger shapes slide along the neckPlay chords and scales as movable patterns you can shift into any key
Drums and bassDividing the beat into eighths, triplets and sixteenthsPlay precisely against a metronome, then feel the groove without it
VoiceBreath, resonance and pitch controlSing in a key that suits your voice, steadily and without strain

Just want to play songs, no theory? That's fine too. Guitar lessons for engineers and students in Afeka start from the songs you love, and theory only comes in when it helps you play better. And if your voice is your instrument, have a look at adult singing lessons for Afeka and Neot Afeka.

Getting started: from Afeka to our school, or Rockstar Home

It depends on your address and your instrument. Here's how it works.

  1. Choose where to learn. From old Afeka, the Ramat Aviv Gimel school is right in the neighbouring area. From Neot Afeka it's a short drive, and you can also ask about home lessons, subject to teacher availability.
  2. Book an intro lesson. A free, no-commitment lesson where the teacher hears what you want to play and sets a direction for your first few months.
  3. Fit it to your schedule. Exam seasons, school runs, shift work – the teacher and the day are chosen so you can keep the lesson going.
  4. Practise smart. A little every day beats a lot once a week. A 20-minute practice plan built for busy weeks keeps you moving, and Rockstar's free tuner, metronome and chord tools help you practise properly at home.
  5. Play with other people. Once the basics are solid, join an ensemble at the school – everything sounds different with other people.

The school serves students from all the surrounding neighbourhoods, and our neighbours to the west have a page of their own on instrument lessons in Neve Avivim. For the full picture, see music lessons across North Tel Aviv, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

Teacher's tip: if you're a numbers person, give yourself one simple metric: the BPM at which you can play a passage cleanly three times in a row. Log it every evening, and only nudge the metronome up by 4 BPM when that happens.

Afeka music lessons: frequently asked questions

Is Afeka College in the Afeka neighbourhood?

No. Afeka College is in Neot Afeka A, in the city's north-east, while the original Afeka neighbourhood lies east of Neve Avivim and south-east of Ramat Aviv Gimel. Rockstar music school in Ramat Aviv Gimel is close to both: right next door to Afeka, and a short drive from Neot Afeka.

I'm an engineering student with a packed timetable. How do I fit lessons in?

Pick a fixed lesson on your lightest day and keep practice short and daily rather than doing marathons. During exams you can agree a different pace with your teacher, so the lessons last all year.

We live in Neot Afeka. Can we have lessons at home?

Yes, through Rockstar Home – lessons at the student's home in North Tel Aviv neighbourhoods, subject to teacher availability. Piano lessons need an instrument at home, and ensembles meet at the school in Ramat Aviv Gimel, which is also where you'll find a drum kit.

Can I work on a song I'm writing during my lessons?

Yes. In guitar, piano and voice lessons you can bring a song you're writing and work on it: chords, structure, melody and performance. Our teachers are working musicians who play, record and produce themselves.

Both the parents and the kids want to learn. Can we do it in one place?

Absolutely. We teach ages 6 to 90, and we can try to schedule several family members on the same day, subject to teacher availability.
