Neve Avivim: a green neighbourhood built for staying power

Neve Avivim is one of the quietest, leafiest corners of North Tel Aviv. It stretches from Einstein Street in the south to KKL Boulevard in the north, and from Namir Road in the west to Haim Levanon Street in the east. At its heart, four main streets – Yehuda HaNasi, Rav Ashi, Tagore and Oppenheimer – wrap around a generous shared space with Gan Yosef Politi, shopping centres, schools and a sports centre.

The first buildings went up in the mid-1960s on Levitan and Pasternak streets, most of the neighbourhood followed in the 1970s, and the last were completed in the mid-1990s on Tagore and Yehuda HaNasi. The result: spacious apartments in mid- and high-rise buildings, where decades-long residents share the lifts with young families and students.

A neighbourhood of people who practise

Fittingly, Tagore Street is home to both the Israel Chess Federation and the neighbourhood's bridge club – pastimes for people willing to invest and improve slowly, which is exactly how you learn music. The neighbourhood has musical pedigree, too: the poet and songwriter Naomi Shemer lived on Oppenheimer Street until the end of her life.

Adults coming back to an instrument

According to municipal figures from 2012, nearly a quarter of Neve Avivim's residents are over 65 – the stage of life when many people remember the instrument they played as a child or in the army. The good news: your hands remember more than you think, and adults bring what children don't have yet – patience, a feel for structure and the ability to listen to themselves. Adult piano lessons in Neve Avivim pick up exactly where you left off, at your pace and with the music you love now – not the pieces you were made to play back then.

Teens and students too

Beit Milman, Tel Aviv University's student residence, is at 32 Tagore Street, and the neighbourhood has its own scout troop and Bnei Akiva branch. For teens and students here – including international students far from home – our Ramat Aviv Gimel school is close enough to fit a lesson into a busy week.

Students and young adults

Guitar lessons for Neve Avivim residents can take place at our nearby school or at home.

Teens and kids

Singing lessons in Neve Avivim are open to every age – and it's worth reading our advice on keeping your voice healthy as well. If hoarseness or pain lingers, see an ENT doctor or a speech therapist before you carry on.

Getting started: from Neve Avivim to our school, or Rockstar Home

Neve Avivim borders Ramat Aviv Gimel, home of our music school. Here's the route from first conversation to a weekly lesson.

  1. Decide what's convenient. The school is a short ride across KKL Boulevard. Prefer your own living room? Rockstar Home brings the teacher to you, subject to teacher availability.
  2. Come for a no-commitment intro lesson. The teacher hears what you've played before, if anything, and sets a realistic starting point.
  3. Set a rhythm. Adults returning to an instrument do best with fifteen minutes a day rather than an hour at the weekend.
  4. Practise with the right tools. A tuner, a metronome and a chord dictionary are all free in the Rockstar practice tools,.
  5. Play with other people. When you're ready, you can join ensembles for adults and teens from Neve Avivim at the school.

Curious about the neighbours? To the north, across KKL, is the music school in Ramat Aviv Gimel, and south of Einstein Street there's a page on music lessons in Green Ramat Aviv. For the full map of every neighbourhood, see music in the neighbourhoods of North Tel Aviv.

Teacher's tip: coming back after years away? Don't start with the piece you played at twelve. Pick something simpler, play it at half speed with a metronome, and only speed up once it comes out clean three times in a row. Confidence returns faster than technique – and pulls the technique along with it.

Neve Avivim music lessons: frequently asked questions

I haven't played the piano in thirty years. Can I really come back to it?

Absolutely – it's one of our favourite things to teach. We start from what your hands still remember, refresh your note reading at your own pace, and choose repertoire you genuinely want to play. The first goal is one complete piece you can play from beginning to end.

Can I have piano lessons at home in Neve Avivim?

Yes, through Rockstar Home – lessons at the student's home in North Tel Aviv neighbourhoods, subject to teacher availability. You'll need an instrument at home, and a good digital piano is fine. If you prefer, you can learn at our school in Ramat Aviv Gimel, across KKL Boulevard.

Do I need to buy an acoustic piano to start?

No. For most students a digital piano with 88 weighted keys and a sustain pedal is enough. In an apartment building it has an extra advantage: you can practise with headphones in the evening. Ask your teacher before you buy.

I live in an apartment building. Can I still learn the drums?

Yes. Lessons are easiest at our school, on a real kit, and at home you practise on a quiet practice pad or an electronic kit with headphones. That way you make progress without falling out with the neighbours.

How close is the music school to Neve Avivim?

Very close. Neve Avivim and Ramat Aviv Gimel are neighbouring areas separated by KKL Boulevard, and Rockstar music school is at 85 Meir Feinstein Street in Ramat Aviv Gimel – a short ride from anywhere in the neighbourhood.
