Learning music where you actually live

People rarely quit an instrument because they stop loving music. They quit because the lesson was across town at an awkward hour, and by the first rainy winter it slipped off the calendar. When your music school is a few streets away, the lesson becomes a habit – and habits produce progress.

Ramat Aviv Gimel was built in the 1970s in the city's north-west corner, with Namir Road on its western edge, KKL Boulevard and the Afeka neighbourhood to the south and east, and the open land of Galilot Ecological Park to the north. It's a mix of six- to fifteen-storey buildings and a few streets of private houses, a large shopping centre, a community centre and sports clubs. Most of its streets are named after the Olei HaGardom, underground fighters sentenced to death under the British Mandate – our own street, Meir Feinstein, among them.

A lesson that fits between everything else

Teenagers here already have a full week: school, the scout troop, activities at the Rozin community centre, exams. What works is a lesson they can walk to – no lifts, no carpool spreadsheets. That's why guitar lessons in Ramat Aviv Gimel, along with drums and voice, slot so naturally into the week for high-schoolers from the neighbourhood: they head out, have their lesson and are home in time for dinner.

Adults benefit too: after a day at the office you won't drive across town, but you will walk two streets for a piano or singing lesson. And if you're studying at Tel Aviv University, which is also in Ramat Aviv, a lesson can sit between the last lecture and the evening without costing you either.

Right in the neighbourhood, a proper music school

Rockstar has been teaching for more than twenty years, and every one of our teachers is a working musician who performs, records and produces. This isn't a casual after-school club but a music school with one-to-one lessons, ensembles and student concerts – that happens to be around the corner. Comparing options? Which lessons suit you: teens, adults and kids in Ramat Aviv Gimel

Same music school, three very different starting points.

Teens and high-schoolers

At 15 to 17 you want to play real songs with friends, fast. We build technique through the music you actually listen to, and aim for a band. Drum lessons for teens at our Ramat Aviv Gimel music school happen on a real drum kit – something that's hard to practise in a high-rise flat.

Students and adults

Some arrive with an old dream of playing the piano. Adult piano lessons in Ramat Aviv Gimel are built around your schedule, and the pace follows your goal: playing for yourself in the evening, accompanying a singer, or finally understanding harmony.

Kids from age 6

Younger children get a gentle start: rhythm and listening games and songs they already know. The instrument is chosen together after an intro lesson, and walking to lessons makes the week easier for parents too.

Not sure where to begin? Common starting points:

Singers from the area work on singing lessons at our Ramat Aviv Gimel music school with teachers who perform themselves, and when the time is right they join a student band in Ramat Aviv Gimel, stepping on stage with players of a similar age and level. Before that first show, have a read of our guide on how to prepare for a live performance.

How it works: from your front door to our music school

For residents the logistics barely exist. Here's the route from first message to a weekly slot.

  1. Leave your details. Fill in the form on this page with the student's age, the instrument you're curious about and any experience. We'll get back to you.
  2. Come for an intro lesson. A free, no-commitment lesson at the school, 85 Meir Feinstein Street. The teacher listens and asks what you'd like to be playing a year from now.
  3. Build a plan. You set a regular day and time, plus a first plan: songs, technique and a short practice routine.
  4. Practise at home. Ten to twenty minutes a day beats two hours once a week. Between lessons, the free Rockstar jam tracks let you play with a "band" in your own living room.
  5. Get on stage. When you feel ready, you join an ensemble and our student concerts. That's the moment practice turns into a goal.

The school serves all of North Tel Aviv, and many of our students come from the neighbouring areas: Neve Avivim lies just across KKL Boulevard to the south, and old Afeka sits to the south-east. Our neighbours have their own pages with tailored information – see music lessons for Neve Avivim residents and music lessons for our Afeka neighbours. For the bigger picture across every neighbourhood, there's also a page on music lessons throughout North Tel Aviv.

Teacher's tip: practise for ten minutes on the evening of your lesson, before the week gets going. That's when everything is still fresh, and that first session decides whether you'll still remember the material next Tuesday.

Can I book a lesson straight after school or work?

Yes, and plenty of our students do exactly that. Times are arranged individually with your teacher, and at the intro lesson we'll find a slot you can keep all year.

I'm an international student at Tel Aviv University. Can I take lessons in English?

Yes. Mention that you'd prefer English when you book, and we'll tell you which teachers are available to teach in it. Start from zero or pick up an instrument you dropped, and plan around your exams.

Our daughter is seven. What age can children start?

From age 6. At the intro lesson the teacher sees what draws her in – rhythm, the keyboard or singing – and only then do you choose an instrument. For kids in the neighbourhood, the big advantage is a lesson close to home with no driving.

Do you teach at home, or only at the school?

For Ramat Aviv Gimel residents the school is close enough that coming to us is usually simplest. For the surrounding neighbourhoods of North Tel Aviv we also offer Rockstar Home – lessons at the student's home, subject to teacher availability.
