A setup is the mechanical adjustment of the guitar: string height, neck relief, intonation and friction at the tuning pegs. A guitar with a good setup is easier to play, stays in tune and sounds clean along the whole neck. A guitar without a setup, even an expensive one, can feel like a torture device. Many beginners give up because of this, not because of a lack of talent.
Signs your guitar needs a setup
- It hurts to press the strings, especially on the first frets (the strings are too high).
- There’s a buzz when you play certain notes (the strings are too low or the neck is bowed).
- An open chord sounds in tune, but the same chord at the 12th fret doesn’t (an intonation problem).
- The guitar goes out of tune within minutes, even with old strings.
What a professional setup includes
- Truss rod adjustment: sets the slight curvature of the neck. Too much or too little, and the strings buzz or sit too far away.
- String height (action): adjusted at the bridge. Beginners benefit from a relatively low action that’s easy on the hands.
- Intonation: adjusting the string length at the bridge so every fret is in tune along the whole neck.
- Cleaning and care: cleaning the frets, lubricating the nut, checking the tuners and connections.
- New strings in a gauge that suits your style and your hands.
When should you do a setup?
A new guitar deserves an initial setup right away (most guitars leave the shop with a generic adjustment). After that: once a year, when the seasons change (winter and summer in Israel change the humidity and the neck), or when you switch to a different string gauge.
What can you do yourself?
Changing strings, cleaning and a basic check of string height are things any student can learn, and we show them in our guitar lessons. Truss rod adjustment and intonation are better left to a technician, at least the first few times.
