It’s one of the questions we’re asked most in conversations with parents from Ramat Aviv and the surrounding area: “Which instrument is right for my child?” The short answer: the instrument the child wants to play. The long answer, the one that really helps, is below.
First of all: listen to the child
A child who imagines themselves drumming won’t stick with the piano just because “piano is a good foundation”. Motivation is the number one factor in success in music lessons, far ahead of talent. Ask: which instrument draws you? What would you like to play your favorite song on?
By age
- Ages 5–7: piano and keyboards are a comfortable start (the sound comes out immediately, with no physical effort), and so is singing. Guitar is possible with a child-sized guitar (1/2 or 3/4). Drums are possible, and very exciting, but require basic coordination.
- Ages 8–11: almost everything is open: guitar, drums, piano, vocal training. This is the age when many kids find “their instrument”.
- 12 and up: the choice is already driven by the music they love. Electric guitar, bass, drums and singing lead the way, and bands and ensembles become the main engine.
By personality
- An energetic child who needs to move? Drums.
- A child who sings all over the house? Vocal training, and maybe guitar or piano for accompaniment.
- An independent child who likes figuring things out alone? Guitar or piano.
- A sociable child who loves being part of a group? Any instrument, but definitely an ensemble as early as possible.
How much does it cost to start?
Not as much as it seems. A basic keyboard, a kids’ acoustic guitar or a drum practice kit (pad and sticks) cost a few hundred shekels. Don’t buy an expensive instrument before the child has kept at it for a few months, but don’t buy one so cheap that it doesn’t sound good either; that’s discouraging.
The common mistake
Choosing a “general” teacher who teaches everything. Kids can feel when someone really knows how to play, and teachers who are working musicians on their instrument create a completely different connection. At Rockstar every teacher teaches the instrument they live.
